Give your type some personality! In this interactive workshop you'll gain new techniques for experimenting with letters and expertly apply type principles to client and personal design projects.
Join us!So you've got a new logotype to design for a client. You've got a brief that lays out exactly what that mark needs to express. Wanna know what you don't need to do? Waste your time scrolling through fonts, endlessly searching for "the one". It's time to really learn type- and that means learning how to experiment with typefaces. With this workshop you'll be in charge of your final design outcomes instead of being at the will of what's available in the marketplace.
Ready-made fonts are just the beginning. It's time to break away from your type library and experiment with the design possibilities of letterforms. Once you see the endless possibilities that exploring type has to offer you'll stop searching endlessly for the perfect font and start making your own! In this workshop you'll:
Understand the technical terms of type design
Make changes to letterforms
Use type design to express values and feelings
Have more creative freedom with type
Chances are, if you're in the design world, you're communicating concepts through words. Why not make the design of those words matter? Strike the right emotion. Elicit a response. Go beyond your font library. You can do all of this and more once you unlock the skills needed to experiment with type. So the next time a design job comes your way that requires an out-of-the-box design solution, you won't have to decline the job or hire out to make it happen. Because you'll have all the skills you need to get the job done.
Marie is a Monotype Brand Designer, at the crossroads between typography and branding. She's involved in custom type projects and on typeface releases. After studying both linguistics and type design, she still finds it incredibly exciting to explore the relationship between written information and the visual form of language. How small changes to letters can help express what’s in the words, or create an interesting contrast. She wants to share that possibility for nuance for anybody working with letters, giving attendees the joy of making type work for them.
New to type? Need a refresher on the basic vocab? We've got you covered- because even if a client doesn't need to know all the ins and outs of your type designs, any typographer worth their salt needs to know a few terms to get started.
Let's loosen up and play! Marie will guide you through a few preliminary exercises to help you see the possibilities of what letterforms have to offer so you can start exploring on your own.
Design is always easier when you've got a framework to follow- and that's exactly what Marie will be walking you through. So the next time you have a small type project to conquer, like a logotype or a monogram, you won't be stuck staring at a blank screen wondering where to start.
