This course is for any designer looking to understand type to improve their layout and design skills.
I learned more about typography in this course than during my BA in graphic design. This gives me confidence that I can make effective layouts and better design of any kind. I also felt I was part of a community, who learned together. Once a week for seven weeks, Chris critiqued our submitted layouts and this motivated us to put knowledge into practice and submit our work. This course is the best investment I've made in myself in becoming a better graphic designer. And I've invested in a lot of courses and books.
High-quality writing beats high-quality design. It's odd for me to say this considering two things: 1) I'm a designer, and 2) I don't consider myself a writer. After 100+ posts and hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, I’ve discovered that the biggest thing that will help you grow is to learn how to write for the platform.
Short, clear, simple, and honest writing that feels conversational outperforms all other types of posts. Write from the heart. Share openly. Reveal your true, vulnerable self. Share what you've learned.
You can spend time to make your writing look better, but if the idea isn't there, it's the law of diminishing returns. Start with good writing. Finish with good design. Not the other way around.
Once you get your idea down, don't let design get in the way of the message. Poorly designed layouts that use too many visual gimmicks, colors, or that suffer from low contrast, impede the audience's ability to read your writing.
